“Some people are so poor that all they have is money”, so the saying goes. Some people in Nigeria are just demonstrating that right now. Nigerians are reportedly buying pizza from London and delivering it to Nigeria through British Airways!
The Pizza travels by air over the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara desert – a distance of over 4,000 miles.
Nigeria’s agriculture minister, Audu Ogbeh, is not happy about it, and rightly so. But apart from the problem itself, there is a big mindset problem: some Nigerians don’t see anything wrong with it at all. Some views expressed on Twitter in the wake of the agric minister’s comments prove just that.
Some asked what the fuss is if Nigerians prefer to eat pizza made in London.
To state the obvious, buying pizza all the way from London will have negative effects on Nigeria’s economy – an economy which like Ghana, suffers from spending millions of dollars every year to import so many things, ranging from toothpick to aircraft.
It’s said. Most of the world’s greatest business tycoons who know how to make wealth genuinely, know that after yourself, the next thing is to try and make profits from external markets abroad, to expand your business and make your country richer while creating jobs.
But here we are, Nigerians who have plenty Naira to spare are taking their phones and needlessly ordering pizza from thousands of miles away and having it flown to them.
No names have been mentioned yet but it would be a good bet to say that among those Nigerians buying pizza from London, a significant part of them made a lot of their money through the wrong means.
It’s Nigeria we’re talking about.
