‘The Happy One’ Jose Mourinho was disgruntled over Anthony Martial disappearing from Manchester United’s preseason tour of the U.S to be at the birth of his child, resulting in the forward being slapped with a two-week fine.
The incident obviously led to extended talks of an inflaming rift between the forward and the Portuguese manager, leading to wild speculations that he [Martial] was on his way out of Old Trafford.
However, the 22-year-old put such rumors to bed after United’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea, stating that his relationship with Mourinho had never taken a tumble as had been reported.
Now, a sparkling form has seen the French forward score five goals United’s last six games across all competitions, and Jose Mourinho has professed that he has always believed in the former Monaco player.
Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of their cracker against Manchester City this weekend, Mourinho was full of praise for the way Martial had exerted himself in recent weeks and was adamant that his uncompromising handling of the United no.11 had contributed immensely to his flourishing.
“I never gave up,” Mourinho explained. “I never gave up my feelings that this was the right way for him, even if he had to go through difficult moments.
“I knew that for him to become a really top player, he needed to overcome some barriers that I put on the road for him. It is up to his talent, because he has phenomenal talent.
“It was just a question of him understanding what a top player is because there is a big difference between a top talent and a top player.”
Mourinho would nonetheless hope that he continues his outstanding form in the derby at the Etihad on Sunday.
Meanwhile the France international’s recent displays with Manchester United has been rewarded with a recall to Didier Deschamps squad for the forthcoming Nations League match against the Netherlands, plus a friendly with Uruguay.
