Real Madrid midfielder, Toni Kroos has labelled Julen Lopetegui ‘a great coach and great person’ after the Spaniard was axed following a string of bad results which sees Madrid currently placed ninth in La Liga.
After a nightmare run of five loses in seven games -charred by a 5-1 annihilation by bitter rivals, FC Barcelona over the weekend- Lopetegui was finally put out of his misery by Real Chief, Florentino Perez on Monday night.
Following Lopetegui’s departure from the club, Toni Kroos has tweeted a tribute displaying his admiration and sympathy for the 52-year-old this evening.
The Germany international posted a photo of him standing with the axed boss and wrote: ‘The biggest defeat for players is when the coach has to go.
Especially in this case because he is a great coach and great person.’
It has been a 2018 to forget for Lopetegui, who was sacked from his role as Spain coach two days before the World Cup in Russia for accepting a deal with Madrid while still contracted to the national team.
Less than five months into his tenure as Zinedine Zidane’s replacement, he has again been fired for failing to live up to expectation.
Santiago Solari temporarily takes charge of Los Blancos in their fixtures against Melilla in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, and in Saturday’s must-win La Liga clash against Real Valladolid.
