Mo Salah, Sadio Mane Only Africans Shortlisted For Ballon d’Or Award

Egyptian forward, Mohamed Salah, and Senegalese talisman, Sadio Mane, are the only Africans to enter a 30-man nominees list for the Ballon d’Or following some alluring performances with Liverpool FC, and helping the English club reach the Champions League final last season.

Although they suffered defeat in the decider against Real Madrid, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah shared 20 goals between them in a campaign which saw Liverpool blow the likes of FC Porto, Manchester City, and AS Roma away with their vicious attacking potency.

Senegalese forward, Sadio Mane, has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or Award.

Mohamed Salah, recording a 42-goal haul in 2017/18, winning the FIFA Puskas Award, and coming very close to winning the FIFA Best Men’s Player this September, looks a more genuine challenger for the Ballon d’Or award than Sadio Mane, who like Salah, endured a disappointing World Cup.

Egypt and Liverpool striker, Mohamed Salah.

Current FIFA Best Men’s Player winner, Luka Modric, is also nominated after a year of brilliant performances with Real Madrid and Croatia, and has again been tipped by connoisseurs of the game to break the Ronaldo-Messi hoodoo. The 33-year old won the Champions League, and was inspiring in Croatia’s second place finish at the World Cup in which he was crowned the tournament’s best performer.

Luka Modric won Player of the Tournament at the World Cup.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, and Juventus ace, Cristiano Ronaldo- both five times winners- having dominated the award for the past decade, have also been included in the shortlist.

Ronaldo was instrumental in Real’s European conquest last season, and hit a World Cup hat-trick for Portugal against Spain before moving to Juventus this summer, while Messi secured the Golden Shoe Award as he steered Barcelona to their 25th league title last season.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated the awards for a decade.
