While many people are content just to keep up with family and friends by sharing pictures, celebrities and other brand influencers are getting paid good money for some of their Instagram posts in which they endorse brands and products.

That cap your favourite celebrity was wearing in that photo, those shoes they were wearing, that branded cup they were drinking from, chances are that the company is paying thousands of dollars to have their items appear in the celeb’s photo.

According to Captiv8, an American company which deals with brand influencers and connects them with brands, influencers with a modest following of 50,000 to 500,000 followers on Instagram make an average of $1,000 for each sponsored post on the platform.

Celebrities with three million to seven million followers can be paid as much as $75,000 for a post on Instagram and for influencers with more than seven million followers, earnings from one post or a few posts endorsing a product, can reach up to double that amount: $150,000.

Among the high earners are celebs like Kim Kardashian who with a following of around 100 million, is rumoured to earn about $500,000 for an Instagram post or a short campaign of posts endorsing a product. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo who has more than a million followers, reportedly makes about $415,000 for promos on the platform.

But earnings are not solely based on having a high number of followers. Beyoncé for instance rakes in more cash with her 114 million followers than Selena Gomez who has 136 million followers. In 2017, Beyoncé’s earnings from Instagram were estimated at £800,000 for a sponsored post while Selena Gomez was rumoured to be earning £500,000 for each post on Instagram. Both celebs had lower followers in 2017. The Instagram account of Beyoncé was just a little below 100 million followers while Selena Gomez had crossed the 100 million mark by several million followers.

It appears that other factors such as the product, how it resonates with the celebrity’s personal brand, and the probability of influence all have a bearing on earnings.

So that’s an idea what your celebrities are making. Have you got an Instagram account? How much is it worth? If it’s not worth much, don’t go broke trying to get followers. Just remember next time you find yourself spending too much time on Instagram, that for some, the image sharing platform is big business.
